Engagement Session with Ed + Krystle | Kitchener Engagement Photographer

Monday, August 16, 2010

This past Saturday evening I had the pleasure of shooting Ed & Krystle (and their twin Blackberries ;P). We couldn't have asked for a better night. Evening light, a beaming couple and the beautiful backdrop of Rockway Gardens all helped create a stunning little image gallery for my lovely couple.

Thanks for putting up with all of the lens changes!!!

Paul + Monique | Engagement Session | Kitchener Engagement Photography

Here are just a few more engagement shots from our session last night!

Paul + Monique | Engagement Session | Kitchener Engagement Photography

Just a little sneak peak at Paul & Monique's engagement session from last night. There are many more to come but I couldn't help putting up at least one to help build up anticipation!

We were very lucky to have had some great locations to shoot. Who knew Woodstock could provide such an industrious railway backdrop? Many coloured cars and some great factory walls provided a lovely, industrial-chic backdrop for the beginning of our session. A little old woman with a sweep of white hair gave us the grace of not catching us sneaking into the fenced off ruins of the old St. Mary's Church. We ended our session in uptown Woodstock near the museum and marketplace.

Armed with my coffee I'm taking the rest of my morning to edit/post a few more! Paul and Monique I'm hoping to have quite a few more up this afternoon! Thank you for making your session so fun and unique! You two are so lovely!

Ahh Paris...Je t'aime | Kitchener Photographer

I've finally found them! After sorting through countless folders on two separate (and full) external hard drives I have finally found some amateur images I took in Paris during our honeymoon in 2007! The last few are of various sculptures on display in the Louvre (my favourite being the Venus de Milo - the last sculpture shown).

And what would a Paris post be without a few pics of the Moulin Rouge and the iconic Parisian rooftops? I'm throwing my Tour d'Eiffel pics into Lightroom to see what I can do with them! Should be a fun afternoon.

About two weeks ago I stumbled upon an awesome blog devoted to providing travellers with information on everything Paris. Here is a link to the site (I particularly love the write-ups on the eclectic cafes and small-scale hotels): http://thebestparis.info/ . The photos are fantastic and very colourful and I love the feel that the site gives to Paris, like it's just around the corner and waiting for you to explore.

Keeping with the Parisian theme, I've also stumbled upon a great chanteuse, Coeur de Pirate. Her first album has become my album of choice while editing and is just gorgeous to listen to. You can find Coeur de Pirate and her amazing voice/songs here.

My Favourite Niece | Student Portraiture | Waterloo Portrait Photographer

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

I was so lucky to snap a few photos of my incredible and beautiful niece at the family farmhouse this Summer! These images were shot during the end of our stay and and after a critical shopping venture in Quebec City for wardrobe ;P.

I can't wait for our trip to Cleveland and our urban follow-up shoot!

Mmmmmaple Syrup Cakes | Kitchener/Waterloo Food Photographer

Sunday, August 8, 2010

Who knew a made-up-on-the-spot recipe would yield such delicious results?! Prompted by my three year old to make "pupcakes" I set to work gathering the meagre baking ingredients we had at the farm and was quite certain that our cake-making venture would end tragically. What greeted us when we opened the oven was a delicious aroma of maple syrup and 12 cute little cupcakes with rustic-like, cracked tops (hardly haven risen - we couldn't find a single teaspoon of baking soda or powder). They were promptly gobbled up with breakfast and I now have a one-of-a-kind recipe for maple syrup cakes!

Maple Syrup Cakes.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of butter
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 cups of flour
- a bit of salt
- approximately 3/4 cup of maple syrup
- milk (about 3/4 cup or enough to keep batter moist and creamy-looking)
- ground cloves + nutmeg (enough to spice nicely)

Method:
a) Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
b) Cream together butter and sugar. Add egg and stir mixture until creamy.
c) In a separate bowl, mix together flour, salt, cloves + nutmeg. Add this dry mixture to the creamed mix.
d) Add milk and maple syrup to mixture and stir to keep creamy texture.
e) Dollop into cupcake pans and bake for approximately 20 minutes or until toothpick/fork inserted comes out clean.

I hope you all enjoy this impromptu recipe as much as we did! The cakes are also delicious with a few scoops of wild blueberry jam on top!

Fabulous Aberfoyle Market Finds | Kitchener Commercial Photography

Sunday, July 18, 2010

The Aberfoyle Antiques Market is THE most jaw-dropping and eclectic market I have ever been to! I was thrilled to spend just a few hours there before tackling yet more unpacking, but how I wish I could have devoted more time to looking/digging through the vendors' wares. A second trip will be in order as soon as we're better settled in our new house and are home from a little family vacation.

The market had an insane selection of antiques and it would certainly take a couple of days of browsing to make sure you saw everything. Below is a small list of pieces I found - but couldn't quite afford - and have added to my wishlist:

1. Handsome dark-stained wooden desk with art-deco inspired hardware ($125.00)
2. Purple glass door knobs ($40.00)
3. Selection of vintage cameras & crank video recorders ($50.00-$100.00)
4. Vintage cash register banks in pistachio, red & blue ($25.00 ea.)
5. Various coloured vintage telephones (starting at $85.00)
6. Distressed pistachio green toy trunk ($250.00)

This morning I picked up a few lovely pieces of costume jewellery (in aquamarines & greens) as well as a cute little salmon-coloured rose broach. A "new" red vintage phone also found a cozy home in my office and I'm crossing my fingers that a certain desk I love will still be there in a few weeks (when I hope to make my second trip back)!

Mmmmm, Lychees | Food Photography

Thursday, July 15, 2010

My husband bought this bunch of lychees in Chinatown in Toronto over the weekend. If anyone has a lychee dessert recipe to share please do so! We have quite a few left and I'm compiling a list of yummy lychee-eats. Here are a few ideas so far:

1. Lychee Martinis (made with vodka, peach schnapps, cranberry juice, & lychee juice)
2. Lychee Fruit Salad (including mangos, oranges, grapes & pineapple)
3. Lychee Panna Cotta (check out a great recipe - and some amazing image stills - here)

Photo Art | Wall Collages | Waterloo Photography Studio

Thursday, July 1, 2010

My Family and I are all set and incredibly excited to finally move into our new home this weekend. Slightly more excited am I to begin using our front room as Novella's new studio space! I have my paint swatches chosen, backdrop support system and new softbox delivered and a beautiful empty space above the fireplace that screams "Show off your work here! Must order canvas wraps from Willow stat!" Well, I'm so excited about creating my first image collage that I've been doing a little research this morning, instead of last minute packing. Here are a few images and another blog that I found to be very helpful:

A blog I intend to begin following http://designformula.blogspot.com/. Peggy, an interior designer, offers great step-by-step advice in creating, designing, and executing beautiful wall collages and includes some of her own sketches of collage-by-room scenarios. The pictures in this post are from her blog (unsure if they were taken by her though).

Here are a few of my favourites:

I would LOVE input on this post! I feel completely lost when it comes to organizing eye-catching wall collages and if you have suggestions please feel free to post!

June Maternity Session | Kitchener Maternity Photographer

Sunday, June 27, 2010

What a lovely session! The rain actually held off for the first hour of our shoot and we hit up Victoria Park in Kitchener for some great outdoor shots.

My Mother-to-Be was absolutely radiant and looked so graceful posing for her pics. I'm excited to get the rest of the images to you!

I was also very excited my couple brought Nora, a beautiful Lab/Chow mix, who was just so sweet and cuddly the whole time! There was absolutely no hesitation to pet her and return home to test my husband's "allergies." Not only did his nose NOT run, but he didn't seem to suffer from itchy eyes/skin or sneezes - surprise, surprise. This is well over my third attempt at inducing an allergic reaction from my husband.....Honey, I believe your daughters would like a puppy....

Maternity Slideshow for Lauren + Wes | Waterloo Maternity Photography

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

How do I spend a rainy afternoon? I watch a Barbie movie with Madeleine and create a slideshow for two Parents-to-Be of course! I hope you enjoy the film! Please visit the facebook fanpage to watch (my slideshows play much better there than on Blogger, for some reason).

Music credits go to Faultine & Joseph Arthur for their cover of Wild Horses.

St. Jacobs Farmers Market | Waterloo Photographer

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Yet another warm, Summery Saturday spent at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market! We hopped on the train at Waterloo Station and took in views of Waterloo Park, the University of Waterloo, & RIM before our drop-off at the market. The train ride was free for fathers and my husband, Joseph, even won a surprise draw (a wrench set)!!! Lucky Guy!

Our market bounty included sweet peas (HUGE ones!), fresh corn, cherries, apples and a little potted thyme plant. The Girls have already eaten half of their peas and we're having our corn with tomorrow's Fathers Day dinner (flank steak, arugula and parmesan).

Happy Fathers Day boys!

More Maternity Shots | By Novella Photography

Friday, June 18, 2010

Here are just a few more shots from my Maternity Session with Lauren, Wes, Stella & Baby! I found a few nifty (and free!) storyboard templates from Coffee Shop. They are SO easy to use and really add pizzazz to the presentation of your pics. Rita, the wonderful, independent woman who runs Coffee Shop also offers free Photoshop actions, tutorials, custom blog & logo design, textures and a slew of other great tools for dressing up your images!

Summer Maternity Session | Novella Maternity Photographer

Thursday, June 17, 2010

This evening I had the greatest pleasure to meet and shoot Lauren, Wes and their sweet little dog, Stella. Here is a sneak peek at their maternity session with Novella! There is MUCH more to come but, egads! It's 11:30PM and I'm pooped.

Fresh, Local Strawberries | Novella Food Photography

Madeleine and I thoroughly enjoyed a big bowl of fresh Ontario strawberries for breakfast this morning! They were insanely delicious and perfectly ripe. They have also inspired me to write up a quick Summer Faves list:

1. Warm evenings and wine in the garden
2. Fresh, local fruit from the St. Jacobs & Kitchener Markets (going this Sat!)
3. July raspberry harvest from the garden
4. "The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott" by Kelly O'Connor McNees (which has received the Oprah-bump as one of her top Summer reads!)
5. Family, Maternity & Newborn shoots galore!
6. The Girls' slip-n-slide (which I play in every chance I get)
7. My Holga, which thrives in hazy, bright summery light
8. Our Cardinal family
9. Just Us family reunions
10. New Summer wardrobe from Modcloth!

I'm going to be out tonight enjoying my first Summer Maternity session of the year! Check back for a sneak peak tonight!

A Trip to St Jacobs | New Props!!!!

Saturday, June 12, 2010

I LOVE antique shopping! The Family and I headed into St Jacobs this morning to check out the Antique Market and had some glorious finds, including my vintage silk-flowered hat ($12) and three plastic pearl necklaces ($3 ea.). My lovely Husband found a vintage-inspired Pin-Up book featuring all pin-up paintings by artist Gil Elvgren. In addition to being a painter, Elvgren was also a photographer and his work is quite the inspiration to vintage boudoir portraitists.

Above is my absolute favourite Elvgren painting. You might not be able to see the image on the magazine but the woman pictured is wearing a blue feathered hat (Ms. Redhead's inspiration for her probable attempt at plucking her bird's feathers to make her own).

If anyone has the location of a great antiques store to visit please don't hesitate to list it in the comments section!

Here are some more stills from the evening!

What a little man!

Film & Photography Show | Child Portraiture by Novella

This evening I had the chance to film and photograph the sweetest little boy with the biggest, bluest eyes I've ever seen! The filming and photography took about 20 minutes with 2 hours of post-production editing work. Credit is very much due to Canadian musician, Basia Bulat, for her gorgeous melody titled "The Secret." She is, hands down, my favourite singer and I've seen her 4 times! She's just come out with a new album titled Heart of My Own. My husband and I had the pleasure of seeing her in Toronto at the Phoenix this past weekend and we had such a blast! She's absolutely incredible live and if you get the chance to see her or give her a listen then I highly recommend you do! For all of you local hipsters, Basia is playing at the Hillside Festival in Guelph this Summer. Sun + Outdoor Venue + Basia Bulat = GLORY!

Back to the video! I have been having so much fun editing together little slideshows and it has been much, much easier than I thought it would be. It's a perfect marketing tool for all of you photographers out there. As I stated above, iMovie is incredibly easy to use and as long as your camera can shoot in HD you're golden. I'm going to try and include a small film + photography slideshow with every session I shoot although I have yet to check and see how much room on my CF card the HD video took up! At the least, they'll be short and sweet :).

Special Advertisements | Novella Photography

An another advertisement I'm using for Wedding promotions! Liz was my first Spring Bride this year and her and her husband made my job so easy that day! What a gorgeous couple!

(by the by, all of my adverts are printed by an amazing, Canadian printing company called Willow Paperworks. Printing, processing and shipping is insanely fast and the quality of the final product floors me every time).

Just a quick peek at my new advertisement for Boudoir Portraiture! My gorgeous model is Ms. Kat Lanteigne of GromKat Productions in Toronto Ontario. GromKat is currently hosting an awesome event called Revelry at the Revival Fundraiser on Wednesday, June 16th and proceeds from the event go towards supporting the Revival's CO-OP production of 12th Night! Doors open at 7PM and stay open until 12AM. Please click on the above link for more information regarding entertainment and the Silent Auction (the latter of which I am thrilled to be a part of!!!).

First Waterloo Wedding of the Season | A Novella Photography Slideshow

Thursday, June 10, 2010

On April 3rd, 2010 I was incredibly fortunate to begin my Wedding Season with this insanely in-love couple! All the way from Australia they brought their sweet little wedding to Waterloo's Grist Mill, on the outskirts of Waterloo Park. We had a fantastic time cruising through Uptown Waterloo for a Hollywood-esque Wedding Party photo-op and finished the evening at Puddicombe House in New Hamburg.

Some of the images included within this slideshow were shot by my awesome Assistant Tamsin Lambert of The Eye's the Limit. She took the great pics of the Groom and his Groomsmen getting ready as well as a divine shot of our Bride (and her beautiful veil) entering the Mill.

It was such a beautiful experience being able to photography Liz and Kieran and I wish you both all the best as you begin such an extraordinary and wonderful married life together!

New Novella Photography Blog Home!

Decidedly it's much easier to create and manage a blog if it's managed anywhere else but in iWeb. I lieu of this "discovery" I've decided to re-create my Novella Photography blog with Blogger!

Here you will find my latest work (before it hits the fanpage and website!), as well as great photography-related finds (such as my wonderful printing friends at Willow Paperworks). Hopefully the blog will be as entertaining to read as it undoubtedly is to write and create!
