Maria & Kurt | Engagement Session | Kitchener/Waterloo Wedding Photography

Thursday, October 20, 2011

Best morning Engagement Session ever and thank goodness my Couple was a pair of early risers  (definitely a first, as my clients tend to flock towards evening sessions ;)!  Our 8AM start allowed me to photograph the session under the soft rays of a rising sun and added a beautiful amount of filtered, romantic light to our session.

You guys were absolutely beautiful and so incredibly sweet together and I can't wait to shoot your wedding next year!

I was so incredibly lucky to have been asked by Patty and Greig to shoot their wedding.  Every element was so fun and thoughtful: from their choice of location (Downtown Stratford, Ontario) to their simple, yet symbolic centre-pieces (long, black vases holding both Canadian and Scottish flags).  I don't think I've ever seen so many smiling, genuinely happy people.  You could certainly tell both families were exceptionally close and had shared many memorable moments together leading up to Patty and Greig's wedding day.  Let's just say, it's been awhile since I've laughed so hard during a couple's speeches :).  I must add that I was in complete heaven getting to listen to Scottish accents all day and evening!

Blog Carousel | Faceless Self-Portrait

Sunday, October 16, 2011

Please check out Sandra's blog here for her take on the faceless self-portrait!

***

So, it's the 15th of the month again and this month's theme was a toughy - Faceless Self-Portrait.  As I'm sure you can all imagine I had absolutely no idea how I was going to pull this one off without resorting to typical *faceless* posing.  I did a quick google search on the theme and came across a very interesting idea artistically expressed by photographer/fashion writer Heidi Lender for her series "Once Upon ... "  Heidi's work is a blend of fashion and both public facade and private withdrawal.  My portrait (skinny jeans and moccasins especially) certainly doesn't pack as fashionable of a punch as a portrait by Ms. Lender but I think I did a good job of including important items that especially reflect who I am.

For example, those moccasins are easily my most comfortable pair of *shoes* and definitely my favourite.  When I bought them I even made sure they had rubber soles so I could wear them outside and every time I wear them I'm reminded of my Dad (who also lives in his moccasins :).

The cameras are included for obvious reasons but I thought I would include items that referenced my second passion: reading.  The books piled beside the stool include an amazing food styling guide, Book I of the Malazan Book of the Fallen (by my favourite fantasy author), The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott (by the lovely Kelly O'Connor McNees - who I had the utmost pleasure of shooting an author portrait for), More by John Hodgeman (my kind of funny), a few of the Sandman graphic novels (my favourite graphic novel storyline by Neil Gaiman) and, to top it all off, what I'm currently reading - a bunch of plays by playwright Harold Pinter (Thanks Intisar!).  If you'd like to read into my personality a bit more then I'm sure you might be able to glean critical bits of information from these works.

Just a few more teasers from Maxwell's Newborn session.  Don't you just love the little back wrinkles?!

Baby Maxwell James Clerk | Kitchener/Waterloo Baby/Newborn Photographer

On a very early and chilly Sunday morning, I couldn't think of anything better to work on than Baby Maxwell's snuggly-wuggly Newborn images.  The following images were taken when Max was 8 days old - which was nearing that perfect-picture-taking-timing window.  Newborns should be photographed between Day 2 and Day 10 (and Day 10 is pushing it :).  This is the best time to get those gently posed and sweetly sleeping images.  If Maxwell woke up, he was easily nursed to sleep again.

A Newborn session with Novella will generally last about 3 hours (to allow for feedings, diaper changes, comforting baby, etc).  I like to keep the session atmosphere very relaxed, unimposing and quiet and I tend to be as un-invasive with your newborn as possible (I'm a huge fan of simplicity and gravitate towards the details - such as little feet, wrinkles and those sweet little baby lips that would make Angelina Jolie jealous).

I also shoot entirely with natural lighting and will never use flash for a Newborn session (or any other session, for that matter).  Sessions can take place either at my home studio or at your home, providing there is ample window lighting and enough space to work in (a 10x10 area is perfect!).

There are so many more images of Maxwell to come (including a few of the cutest back-wrinkles I have ever seen) and I can't wait to share everything with you!
